About Crumblove

Hello and ハロー. I am Celestey Crumblove. Practically an American ex-pat, I cheerfully fill my loneliness with food and cheap frills. It isn’t as bad as you might think, but someday, I want to find out just how much money I have spent on bread alone in the past three years.

See this cake? In Japan, we call it “ichigo shooto,” meaning “strawberry shortcake.” This is by far the most popular type of cake. The first time I ate it, I didn’t think much of it. I still don’t. The flavor is very light, with the creme fraiche and sponge mainly accentuating the flavorful strawberries. This cake is a symbol, a symbol of the beginning. After eating my first Japanese cake, I became obsessed with pan (パン, bread).

This is meronpan (メロンパン, melon bread). It is usually not melon-flavored, instead the main characteristic is its melon-shaped, sugar-crusted cookie dough baked on top. I’ve come a long way from packaged breads, but Japanese cake and pan will always draw me. You are what you eat. I am cake. What are you?
